My Top 5 Foods For YOUR Brain

June 19, 2013

What’s up Honey Pies?

Omiiiigosh…I just inhaled one of the bomb cookies I made at 10 o’clock last night. Holy shit, it was good. MMmMmmmMmm…It was chocolate chocolate chip, in case you were wondering. Oh yeah, and, duh, it didn’t have any of your typical gluten, refined sugar and butter bullshit.

Hell-to-the-no!

Instead, it was obviously filled with nourishing ingredients that will, get this, make you smarter! Yes. it’s true. But, I’ll talk more on the brain food later, and by later I mean after I fill your cabezas and ojos (head and eyeballs) up with some “very important” announcements…

smiley

First, I’d like to introduce you to my new backpack. Yes, backpack. Isn’t she cute? I ultimately decided on the “sand” color, because apparently it “goes well with my coloring,” as I was told by one of the Fjallraven salesmen…and black is “too safe,” and we all know I’m not safe. I am so bold and daring…<cough> <cough> Yeah, so sand it was…

I am thrilled to make the switch over from tote-to-backpack, because, frankly, schlepping around the shoulder bag has become such a giant pain-in-the-ass, not to mention the wear and tear I’ve been putting on my nice bags = no bueno.

So there you have it. Important announcement numero uno, done and over. Moving right along…

My second and final can be summed up in three words:

WE. CAN’T. STOP.

…I know. A little embarrassing, but it is THE <pause> JAM! Just like Party in the U.S.A. Girlfriend gets it right every time…with the exception of her hair. blush

If you haven’t heard it already, you can listen HERE. Listen to it twice and then hate me later when you can’t get it out of your head.

Mmm kay, that’s a wrap on announcementville…Let me cut to the chase and talk…

My Top 5 Foods For Your Brain

1). Avocados! Avocados are freaking amazing. Not only are the delicious and versatile – eat them in guacamole, on toast, in salads, in sushi, in smoothies, in cookies! – they are a great source of healthy monounsaturated fat, which basically contributes to healthy blood circulation, which is (obviously) super important for brain functioning – if it doesn’t get enough oxygenated blood, it’s toast! Avocados also help lower blood pressure and reduce chances of developing hypertension. This helps keep the brain sharp and working as efficiently as possible!

2). Wild Salmon! No surprises here, right? Our brain NEEDS FAT to function at it’s finest! Salmon (and sardines, herring and cod) is rich in what’s known as “DHA,” or docosahexaenoic acid (a type of omega-3 fatty acid). In fact, the gray matter in the brain is loaded with DHA! Omega-3’s make the cell membranes in the brain more fluid and able to send and receive messages between brain cells.

3). Flax and Chia Seeds! For the same reason as the salmon, both flax and chia seeds are an excellent source of omega-3’s! I like using ground flax because I think it’s more easily digested, and thus, absorbed by our bodies. I put ground flax in my oatless oatmeal, in cookies and in smoothies ALL the time. I recommend 1-2 T a day of either flax or chia.

4). Berries! Especially BLUE! According to Steven Pratt, MD, author of Superfoods Rx: Fourteen Foods Proven to Change Your Life, researchers have found that blueberries “help protect the brain from oxidative stress and may reduce the effects of age-related conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.” They have also been found to improve motor skills and  increase one’s learning capacity. I have three words for you here: EAT. THEM. UP…by the CUPfuls! Just one cup a day will do it, but by all means, go bananas if you have the urge to eat more!

5). Chocolate! I mean…this HAD to make the list! Any excuse I can get to include chocolate into my life and into yours makes me very happy. Like avocados, chocolate increases blood flow to the brain, which helps promote healthy cognitive functioning. It also contains phenylethylamine, known as “PEA,” which is a chemical that encourages the release of “feel-happy” hormones or endorphins. So chocolate literally makes you feel happier!
